The 112th Congress convened this week. The New Republican led House of Representatives opened business by reading the Constitution to the floor.
I find it hard to believe that this was the 1st time in the history of our Great Country that the document was read in Congress.
I applaud the effort. This was a very novel and noble decision. Every member of Congress swears an oath to uphold the Constitution when they take office. So, it is a great idea for them to know what is that they have sworn to uphold.
I do however have a small problem with what occurred. For some reason, the 18th Amendment (Prohibition) and the 3/5ths Compromise of 1787 (counting slaves) which was part of the 1st Amendment were omitted from the reading.
Was this an oversight, or an intentional decision? Part of the problem I have with government in general is the fact that often times, members of Congress decide to ignore parts of the Constitution and propose laws that are in conflict with our rights as citizens, as prescribed in the Constitution.
Interpreting law is the job of the Supreme Court, not Congress!!! They have an obligation to follow the letter of the law. They should never be allowed to simply ignore any part of the Constitution of The United States of America.
I have high hopes for this 112th Congress. The public sent a stern message to Congress in the November elections. Make sure you watch closely and communicate with your elected officials often about your thoughts as to how they are conducting business.
God Bless America !!!!
